Comparing Pneumatic Wheels and Flat-Free Wheels

Monday, May 23rd, 2016 Published By: Roy Williams

Wheels have changed dramatically over the years and  pneumatic wheels are no exception.  Today, we have a true pneumatic wheel (with air) and a flat free wheel (without air).  These two quality types have many similar features and come in many sizes.  You should also know when to use pneumatic wheels and flat free wheels.

Here are a few things to consider…

Features of Pneumatic Wheels and Flat Free Wheels

Both will deliver a cushioned ride, shock absorption and quiet operation but one trumps the other as virtually maintenance free, it will not go flat. The true pneumatic will have the edge on the ultimate ride as the tube and tire pressure can be adjusted. The flat free offers much the same but in a microcellular polyurethane foam type wheel. Because it is a polyurethane type, it will also have a greater sustainability than the rubber pneumatic wheel in water, most chemical, oil and lubricant environments.

Pneumatic and Flat Free Wheels Come in Many Sizes

Typically diameters will range from 8 inches to 16 inches and load capacities will range from 300 pounds to 1000 pounds per wheel. One of the more popular applications of the flat free wheel is the wheelbarrow. On the job needs for a reliable, durable and heavy duty wheel have made this the tire type of choice. Flat free wheels are available in 3, 4 and 6 inch hub lengths and many different bearing types and sizes.

When to Use Pneumatic Wheels and Flat Free Wheels

Both types of wheels are offered with centered hubs for use in casters and offset hubs for use with hand trucks and other various types of equipment. These wheels are industrial and strictly for use in low speed applications. Both work well indoors and outdoors in hospitals, hotels, electronic laboratories and production studios, just to name a few. The wheels will not mark floors and the wide footprint will easily traverse in lawns, gravel, dirt and uneven terrain.
